Newspaper and Cellotape Creatures

Hello and welcome to my new blog.

I am thinking about some craft activities suitable for children aged 4 - 7 in preparation of an upcoming project and thought I'd post the attempts - successful and otherwise on here!

First of all, here is a little owl that I made called Queenie.  She was very easy to make and using the same method you could make any kind of creature you like.

In fact, my son made his very own unicorn-horned lizard.

What you need:

  • Newspaper
  • Cellotape
  • Kitchen towel or toilet roll (white)
  • PVA glue
  • A paint brush
  • Poster Paint
  • Thin card
  • Anything else you might want to use to decorate your creature, such as glitter, sequins, feathers, felt pens, googly eyes etc.
To get started, simply create a rough shape out of newspaper that roughly resembles the animal you want to make.  Wrap it in cellotape so that it keeps its shape.

Next, mix a little water with some PVA in a small bowl.  Paint the shape all over with glue, then cover with kitchen towel or toilet paper, and paint over the top with the glue mixture again.

Now is a good time to add any details such as a beak or ears, using scrunched up kitchen towel or toilet paper.  Leave to dry completely.

Paint the creature in your chosen colours.  Leave to dry.

And finally, spruce up your creation with whatever sequins and feathers, flowers and buttons you like!  I made Queenie's skirt out of some dark blue paper painted with glitter fabric paint and made some glittery claws out of the same things.  I drew her eyes using felt pens.  Isn't she a little beauty!
